1949 saw the arrival of another legend, Lata Mangeshkar with stupendous hits was relegated to the second position. By now Geeta had become popular as a singer of bhajans and sad songs. However 'Baazi', the debut venture of director and actor Guru Dutt (whom she later married), changed all that. "Tadbeer Se Bigdi Hui" from this film was a huge success.From then on, she sang songs like "Mera Naam Chin Chin Choo" (for Helen in Howrah Bridge) and 

"Babuji Dheeray Chalna" (in Aar Paar) that are popular even today.In 1953 she married Guru Dutt. But theirs was an unhappy marriage. The strained relationship affected her career. And Guru Dutt's death in 1964 broke her. She became an alcoholic and died of cirrhosis of liver in 1972.
