The Nataraja ‘Vigraha’ in the Glorious temple of Chidambaram incorporates all these activities and much more. And now let us proceed to the second aspect of this Nataraja – that of Religion. As everyone knows Hinduism in not a religion as such, but a way of life or Hindu Dharama which envelops all the tenets of Hindu living, specially the ideals of Satyam, Shivam and Sundaram.

It is a well-known fact that beauty either in a statue or in dance, belongs to a Totality, not the part though the part may be beautiful because it in itself has a totality. Beauty lies in perfect integration of movement – colours, lines, sounds, life processes etc., and this integration is the bringing together of the multiplicity to unity. In relation to the ultimate reality, truth is the subjective aspect, while beauty is objective and goodness is the perfect balancing of the two aspects. Thus the Trinity of God according to Plato is “The Good, The true and the Beautiful”, whereas in Hinduism it is Satyam, Shivam and Sundaram.

The Stature of Shiva clearly reflects these three aspects. The Hindu concept of Shiva is thus an elaboration of these aspects. The different concepts of Nataraja’s Dance are of different forms: Such as:

1. Shreshti or creation, Kalika Tandavam or Muni Tandavam (Thriunelveli, Tamra Sabha)
