All of us know that our noble culture had suffered an eclipse during the days of foreign domination. The educational ideals and methods have been almost completely divorced from Indian cultural traditions. However as a free nation our elders have taken the right step in initiating the youth of today in our glorious heritage and cultural traditions. This has had a profound beneficial influence on the appreciation of the classical dance art of India, because most of these dance are

built on our  ancient lore and culture. Thus, at present, two apparently opposing forces are affecting and moulding our dance art, the one that lays stress on our glorious ancient culture and the other, the impact of modernism on all arts. Between these two forces the modern dancers in course of time are bound to evolve something which is representative of the growing times and our pristine culture. However, we are faced with many salutary as well as derogatory influences. The demand for dance has become so great since the last 30 to 35 years that even in a very small town  we find persons posing as dance tutors and teaching some  sort of dance to ardent students. In bigger cities one naturally finds a larger number of dance tutors whose number is increasing day by day. Dance is probably the one field in which a person can claim professional

and tutorial rights even without the necessity of passing any elimination or proficiency test, or sometimes, sad to say, even without any semblance of the knowledge of dance. There are however some good dance institutions in most of the big cities of India, which are recognized and which are doing yeoman service in the progress of dance, But these institutions are not capable of supplying the increasing demand for teachers because although they train students to be come good dancers,
