Better encouragement at home after their teens and proper facilities for training would make them truly good artistes, of whom only a handful have evolved into full-blown grown-up performers. The rest are ensconced in their family circles.

10. The Artiste self-styled

This last type is a positive menace to art, because they call

themselves  artistes and all the while they generally know next to nothing about art. The less said about them the better. In the wake of the dance revival there is a keener interest shown by the public and the press regarding dance performances. Constant appraisals of the types of dances have made them appreciate the good and decry the bad. Art criticism of a definitely constructive type has come into vogue in most of the papers and journals. But in the case of dances and dancers there is also sometimes an uncertain and irrelevant criticism. Sometimes we read about glowing tributes paid to an artiste who, all know, has shaped badly the previous evening.

Criticism is no doubt good for the improvement of art, but it must be tempered with reasonableness, understanding and encouragement of the good art. A famous critic has laid down certain principles for art criticism which we may well take note of her. According to him (1) criticism should be written only on those who are worth criticizing. The unimportant and inartistic performances should be merely ignored. Attempts to extol alive such performances give added publicity to the artistes who should be ignored in the interests of art;
