Orissa :

The dance of the Hill Savara-s, who live in the hills of Koraput and Ganjam in Orissa has religious and ritual background. Hence this dance is not meant for either fun or recreation but, it reflects the deep religious fervor of the people.

Thus the tribal dance of the Savara-s such as escorting the bride to her new home, leading the buffalo the place of sacrifice are merely examples of individual expression in which each person exhibits his or her skill by bending, swinging, jumping, whirling and such other motions. They do not have any set movements or patterns but they hop, stamp and jump as they like, each one holding a stick or a sword, or feathers or even an umbrella and wielding it as he likes. They rarely dance in circles but prefer to go about in lines.

The Muria tribes of Bastar live in colourful and simplistic houses called 'Ghotul-s' which are actually dormitories or clubs of girls and boys. These people lead a merry life dancing, drinking, laughing and enjoying themselves without any thought for the passage of time. The unmarried boys and girls are the members of such 'Ghotul-s' and they have a strictly organized membership.
