It is usually performed during Gokulashtami days. In Maharashtra, a mixture of rice and curd is called 'Kala'. A pot of curd, milk-rice is kept 20 feet above- at a height the dancers cannot reach. The dancers - youth specially, carry other youths on their shoulders and in this acrobatic pattern reach the pot and bring it down. They spray the 'kala' freely on each others' heads and bodies and dance in fun to a specific rhythm. The background music for this is the playing of 'Shahnai', 'Dhol' and 'Tamki'.

The most beautiful and popular dance of Maharashtra is the 'Gowlan' dance the essence of this dance is the love-story of Radha and Krishna and their separation. One person takes the role of Radha and they dance using natural hand gestures and according to the background music.
However, the most important folk dance of Maharashtra is the 'Tamasha Dance'. This was actually prevalent during the time of the 'Peshwa-s'. This can be called as an opera. The leader of this group is called 'Phadkari'. It begins with prayer called 'Nrityagan'.

The danseuses who are brought up in the dancing tradition dance freely with extempore movements having great speed, exhibiting intricate foot-rhythms, delicate bends and clever interpretations. Quite often they sing 'lavani-s' and do 'abhnay' to interpreter the literature of the same. 'Tamasha Dance' is a very popular, attractive, graceful and excitingly enticing dance.
