Bihu and Huchari:
These are two dances which are commonly performed in Assam. Bihu dance is prevalent in Lakhimpur, Shibsagar, Nangang and Darang taluks of Assam. This is performed by the Bodo Kachari and Mikir groups and is known to all members of the society. In the month of April, that is, during the last days of Hindu year, the farmers of the place start this 'Bihu' dance, during their leisure time, dancing and singing their love songs at the time of festival season which lasts for a long time. This dance is of two kinds - one Bihu dance performed in the peaceful atmosphere under the trees and the 'Huchari' which is performed in the streets of villages and small towns. Long ago, the young boys and girls of the villages used to perform this 'Bihu' dance. But now-a-days the men's group and the women's' group perform this separately while the spectators witness this. The commonly used instruments are 'Bihu dhol' which is a big leather-covered drum, 'pata-tal' which is a set of small cymbals - 'Gangana' which is a stringed instrument, a buffalo horn and 'Tuk' which is a bamboo instrument half-split - all these are simple musical instruments. Even the singing is full of simple songs. The dancers stand in a circle or in a figure of 8 or in a line and dance collectively.
