(b) 'Chokkanna tadi' or red beard: This character has a red beard and a red coat. The upper part of the face is coloured black and the lower red. This usually represents the ferocious and terrible characters like Kalkiya, Veerabhadra etc.
(c) 'Karuppu tadi' or black beard: This character has a black beard and black coat. Usually this represents Lord Shiva in the form of a hunter with the allied adornments.

5. 'Kari': In this make-up, the face is completely painted black and the characters have long molars and protruding breasts suggesting demonesses like Poothana, Shoorpanaka and such other evil female character.

To sum up, the Satvika or virtuous characters have green colour, the Rajasika or virile evil characters have red colour and the Tamasika or the ferocious characters have black colour. If a character has both Satvika and Rajasika qualities, then the yellow colour is used. Not only do the various types of make-up symbolize the characters, the costumes also suggest the various characters. Variety of gorgeous head-dresses, shoulder ornaments, chest helts suggest the quality of various characters who are not human but denizens of the heaven or hell thus astounding the simple spectators.
