KATHAK | KATHAKALI

The head-dress worn by the dancer is a creation of beauty, grandeur and majestic art. In their make-up, green, red, black, yellow and white colours are used. The make-up itself takes 6 to 8 hours of labour on each character. This colourful make-up gives brilliance, softness, virile splendour and grotesque appearance to the dancers. The audience which is accustomed to Kathakali art can immediately know the characters by looking at the make-up and head-dress as well as the costumes. The kathakali dancers, depicting men or woman, wear long flowing black hair touching their hips thus giving the characters super human touch.

As for the skirts they wear, some people believe that there is an influence of some western people who settled down or visited the shores of Kerala. To get the Kathakali dancer ready for the stage, hours and hours of hard work is put in by the make-up men in dressing rooms.

The make-up man who is an expert in this specialized art starts applying the colours suitably in the afternoon and finishes by the evening - the dancer lies on his back throughout while the make-up man sits near his head with colours. Make-up for female characters is simple though the costumes, jewellery can be elaborate.
