Here is another example of how a tāla works in relation to the 'sam' (the main beat of the rhythmic cycle), the 'tālis' (or secondary beats) and the 'khālis' (the empty beats) and also how the 'bols' (or spoken rhythms) are related to the sound produced on the tablā. The Ektāl has a rhythmic cycle of twelve beats divided into four + four + two + two beats, which is four divisions and the bols (or spoken rhythmic syllables) are as follows:
