Khayaal
The Ālaap
is a part of the introduction to the KHAYAAL. Khayaal is a Persian word meaning
'idea' or imagination. The Khayaal gives us a total picture of the Rāga. In
khayaal, most singers explore the alāp within the bounds of the composition
in meter, accompanied by tablā. In this type of alāp, called
Vistar or Bhadhat, it is common to use either the long vowel 'a' (aakaar) or the
words of the composition (bol alāp). To commence the performance, the
khayaal singer may sing just a few phrases to give an indication of the structure
and flavour of the rāga (known as 'auchar') before the tablā
