Dhol :
A large drum played with a pair of sticks. It is loud and lacks subtlety. The dhol is used in tribal and rural areas, very often as the prelude to an important announcement.

Gharha :
This is a porous earthenware pot used in north India for keeping water cool or for storage. It is completely circular apart from the short neck and slight lip. It is played with the fingers, sometimes with metal rings on them.

Ghatam :
This is larger than the gharha and not always completely circular. It is used to accompany south Indian music. Some ghatam players produce the most sophisticated rhythms.
