Whatever the cause, tonsillitis tends to strike suddenly, and the worst of the illness is normally over within 48 hours. If the symptom lasts for more than three days or if the sufferer starts coughing up green or yellow phlegm, then seek medical attention.

If tonsillitis has been caused by bacteria, and the symptoms are prolonged or the patient is ill with a raised temperature, a doctor may prescribe an antibiotic such as penicillin. However, if there is no fever, and the patient is not ill, as is often the case, penicillin is unlikely to help and provoke allergy or thrush. If the disease is the result of a virus, antibiotics will not be effective.

For treatment at home, doctors will advise patients to drink plenty of fluids, not to worry if they don't feel like eating, take painkillers such as paracetemol or aspirin and go to bed when the symptoms are at their height.

Treatment
Herbalists consider recurring infection and inflammation of the tonsils to be a key factor in illness in later life. They therefore treat the entire immune system, aiming to eliminate this risk. For example, they may advise to gargle with myrrh, sage, thyme or wild indigo. Taking extra vitamin C may also help boost the body's defence system, especially in winter.

In cases of nasal congestion, and if the adenoids are also affected, avoid dairy products. One or two garlic capsules taken daily especially in the winter may help.
