TONSILLITIS
Children are the most common victims of tonsillitis, a highly infectious inflammation of the tonsils - two masses of tissue at the back of the throat. The complaint causes a sore throat and fever, sometimes accompanied by a headache and
stomach ache. In addition, the neck glands are frequently swollen and there may be a dry cough.

Tonsillitis is usually caused by a virus against which children have not had time to develop resistance. However, it may also be the result of bacteria called streptococci, of which some people are carriers, even though they themselves may be perfectly healthy. Streptococcal tonsillitis with a rash which first appears on the neck and chest is called scarlet fever.
