Being physically cold or getting wet does not cause a cold, but the chances of infection are heightened by stress, exhaustion, depression or chronic sickness, all of which lower resistance.
Despite years of research, there is no effective cure for the common cold or any sure way of shortening its duration. Some people have great faith in the curative power of Vitamin C but this so far has not been medically proved.

The general view among doctors is that colds should be allowed to clear up naturally at home - which they normally do after a week or ten days. But if the symptoms last for longer, than you should see your doctor.
There are however, certain measures you can take to relieve the worst symptoms of a cold:
1. Do drink plenty of fluids - especially cool drinks - for a slight fever. This replaces the fluids lost through sweating.
2. Do take painkillers such as paracetemol in recommended doses for a headache or other aches and pains.
3. Do inhale steam to relieve a stuffed-up nose.
4. Do get some fresh air - take a gentle walk as soon as you feel able.
