To combat this, several courses of action can be taken:
Steam inhalation: This thins and frees the mucus and so it becomes less sticky and is able to flow down much more freely.
Drinking fluids: Apart from alcohol and caffeine.
Shiatsu: Pressing appropriate pressure points in the body helps the to relieve congestion in the nose.
The first is immediately on either side of each nostril.

Apply firm pressure using your index fingers.
The second is situated in the hollow below your cheekbones and vertically down from the middle of your eyes. Putting pressure on these with your thumbs will help reduce congestion in the sinuses.
Saline spray: All this is one teaspoon of salt water to one pint of warm water. Apply it as a spray through the nose.

Avoid dairy products as the protein in milk bonds with mucus to make it seem more sticky. If you are going to cut down on dairy products, make sure you take some form of calcium supplements.

COMMON NOSE AND THROAT AILMENTS
The symptoms of a sore throat and a blocked nose have many different causes. Viral and bacterial infections are responsible for colds, laryngitis, tonsillitis, adenoids and quinsy. Hay fever on the other hand, is a seasonal allergy to grass and other pollens.
Laryngitis often results in temporary hoarseness but if prolonged, it may be caused by polyps or 'singer's nodes' on the vocal cords, particularly if the voice is abused.
