Shama has been singing since the age of 9. She had her first band
at the age of 10 and went onto perform live on, VOK, Voice of
Kenya television with her band. She has since continued her singing
and upon moving to London in 1984, sang freelance for a lot of

in light and semi-classical singing under the guidance of Swati
Natekar. Before recording her own album, Shama did backing vocals
for several albums such as Asha Bhosle's "Chham Chham Nachdi Phiran"
(with Alaap) & Reshma's "The Legend". |
Shama
launched her debut album, Forever Yours in 1995. The album
consists of 8 original songs sung in Hindi. The sound is
definitely Bollywood, with the full orchestra set up of
violins, cello, strings - sound you would commonly hear
on Hindi film soundtracks. The concept, although common
in India, was a major step forward for Asian music in the
UK as this was the first time this kind of sound was produced
outside of India. The album was backed by Mercury Communications,
and promoted it as part of their "SMART CALL" campaign |
