My early memories of singing are at the age of seven or eight. I remember playing my mum's collection of old film songs and singing along at the top of my voice (or so I thought!). I didn't understand Hindi and so had difficulty making out some of the words but that wasn't going to stop me. I was happy enough to make my own words to 'fill in' the gaps!! One day, my father brought home an old harmonium. After days of driving the family mad, I finally got my act together and managed to string together a few notes and sound remotely melodic (very remotely!).

Luckily for everyone around, we were soon visited by a singer from India. He took pity on this little girl desperately trying to impress her family with a musical performance. He taught me my first piece of instrumental music and more importantly, something that was actually melodic (rather than my earlier efforts)  - a melody I still remember, probably because I played it a million times. And then, off I went to show off my newly acquired 'musical skills' to my mates!!!

Harmoniums are bellows-driven, free-reed keyboard instruments related to parlor reed organs. They have a keyboard very much like a piano accordion, only with shorter keys. The harmonium is pressure-powered, the reed organ is vacuum-powered. The harmonium is used extensively in South Asia for classical & meditative music.
